australian design

IILUS lighting instruments are designed in Australia by Goran Stojanovic, Design Director and Principal of Sydney based practice X.Pace Design Group. Trained in architecture and product design in Milan and New York during the 1980’s, Goran’s work rigorously pursues the tenets of modernist design.

Supported by a team of industrial designers and lighting specialists, our common thread is the purpose and desire to deliver intelligently refined products which enrich the lived experience of those who interact with them.

Australian Made

iilus is an Australian architectural lighting company committed to providing high-quality and versatile LED lighting solutions for commercial and residential projects of any scale.

Focusing on a balanced union of design, quality, attention to detail, and technology we are known for creating products for illumination which work in unison with their environment, whether built or natural.

Design Philosophy

Our design philosophy is rooted in the ordered standardisation of elements within architecture, where all parts operate as individual components of a greater working system. We use this guiding principle to ally objects and space via common visual language and purpose. Form and proportion are purposely restrained, while prioritising function and the absence of superfluous detail ensures that our products sit silently and comfortably within the surrounding architecture.

The objective of this philosophy is to achieve a balanced union of design and technology. We develop and manufacture tools for illumination which work in unison with their environment, whether built or natural.

Development of technical componentry is informed by a strong understanding of how objects work alongside and within the fabric of a building. A solid understanding of construction materiality and process allows us to produce lighting instruments which belong.

DESIGN PROCESS

Our concepts are initiated as a response to the spatial characteristics of modern architecture and the treatment of planes with lighting technique. Hand sketches of a luminaire relative to it’s spatial context define the scale and proportion of the concept, with high level ideas then refined to draw out and resolve fine detail. Rounds of conceptualising product ideas followed by prototyping and testing allow us to draw out the critical elements required to form a unified marriage of robust engineering and aesthetic nuance.

THE NAME

iilus [ ‘ai ləs ] is an abbreviation for ‘instruments for illumination’. The name reflects the principle values that the company subscribes to: precision, quality, technology.

THE PEOPLE

iilus was established by the architect Goran Stojanovic. In the following stage of company development he was joined by the tech entrepreneur Craig Neil.

THE BACKGROUND

Our products are conceptualised and designed by Goran, who is the Design Director of iilus and the Principal of Sydney based architectural, interior and industrial design practice X.PACE Design Group.

From Belgrade, across New York, Milan and Tokyo Goran has settled in Sydney. He rigorously pursues the tenets of modernist design and directs the team of industrial designers and lighting specialists, to deliver intelligently refined products which enrich the lived experience of those who interact with them.

THE DESIGN

We do not believe that the lights are about the light on its own, but about enhancement of architectural spaces [ built or landscaped ]. The architecture is about accommodating people. Lights are instruments that help us see, that define the spaces in which we live, shape our mood and feelings and set our energy levels.

Our design philosophy is rooted in the ordered standardisation of elements within architecture, where all parts operate as individual components of a greater working lighting system within the spaces we live in. We use this guiding principle to ally objects and space via common visual language and purpose. Form and proportion are elegantly restrained and the absence of superfluous detail ensures that our products contribute respectfully and comfortably to the architectural spaces.

The objective of this philosophy is to achieve a balanced union of aesthetics and technology, to be there, but not to overwhelm. The architectural background gives us a strong understanding of how lights should serve the spaces and work in unison with the building fabric to become an integral part of their surroundings.

THE PROCESS

Our products are developed as a response to the need to interface with the user, the requirements within the modern and progressive architecture and the treatment of spaces in which we live.

Continuous observation and analysis generate ideas. The sketches transform ideas into concepts. The concepts are transferred into the CAD system and become designs through an endless refinement process.

At some intuitive point the concept becomes a prototype.

The prototype is put aside for a bit, then it gets revisited, examined, scrutinised against other ideas before the button is pushed and it becomes a product.

AUSTRALIAN DESIGN + MADE

We are an Australian architectural lighting company.

We live in Australia, we design here and manufacture everything that we can here.
